The sidebar
The sidebar is how an engenu web site links itself together. When engenu enters a folder for the first time, it inherits any sub-folders and PDF files it finds within the folder into the sidebar. You can edit or resequence these sidebar links in this editor, as well as add links to off-site resources -- other web pages or PDFs or any other sort of web resource that can be accessed by a URL.
The sidebar editor opens in its own window. When you make your changes, you can hit the Save button to see your changes reflected on the screen. You can Save as many times as you want, but if you dismiss the window without hitting Save, your changes will not be retained. Manually dismiss the window when you are done with your changes.
In the main editor window, the changes you just made in the sidebar editor will not be reflected until the next time you either Save and exit or Save and continue.
Changing link titles
In the sidebar editor, engenu will inherit the name of the sub-folder or PDF file as the title for that link. Underbars will be converted to spaces, and the extension (.pdf) will be dropped from PDF files. If you want to change your link titles, you can edit them in the sidebar editor.Recall that engenu can have up to three ways of referring to a sub-folder. If engenu inherits a previously-unedited sub-folder into the sidebar, it will inherit that sub-folder's name as the link title, converting underbars to spaces. You can then go into the sidebar editor to change the link title to something else, as is discussed above.
But if engenu inherits a sub-folder that has already been edited, and it the headline of that subfolder has been edited, engenu will inherit that sub-folder's headline as the link title. But even then, you can still go into the sidebar editor to change the link text for that sub-folder. The link titles you commit to in the sidebar editor are the ones that will persist.
Resequencing sidebar links
Changing the sequence of sidebar links is similar to resequencing photos. When you change the sequence numbers and Save your changes, you will have shuffled the order in which those links will be shown. engenu will inherit sidebar links in alphabetical order, so you can control sequence just by the way you name your folders and PDF files. But resequencing the links in the sidebar editor is another way to achieve the same effect.Adding off-site links
Yo can add as many links as you like to off-site resources. To do this, simply copy the URL you want to link to (do not try to type URLs from memory) and paste that code into the editor. Then type in your link text. When you are happy with the way you have prepared the link, Save your changes. The link will show up in the sidebar editor window. It will come in with the number 9999, and you can resequence the link at will. If you find you have created a link you don't want to show up in the finished page, click on the Hide this link button.Adding or omitting sub-folders
You can restructure an engenu web site just by moving folders around. When engenu notices that a sub-folder (or a PDF file) has been added or removed from a folder, the stoplight for that folder will turn red in the index. Within the main editor, there will be red text in the sidebar of the editor asking you to edit the sidebar links. When this happens, if you go into the sidebar editor and Save the changes, any omitted folders or PDF files will be removed from the record for that folder. Any folders or PDF files will be inherited with the sequence number 9999. Link title will be inherited as you would expect: The headline of the sub-folder, if it has been changed, or else the engenu-modified name of the sub-folder or PDF file. You can edit link text or resequence just as with any other links.
What this means is that, if you decide to completely revisit the logic of your web site, engenu will inherit your changes with a minimum of manual editing.
